Carol Jeanne (Clemens) Fitzgibbons passed away on Monday, March 14, in a Sioux Falls hospital after a short battle with illness. She was 69.

Carol was born October 1, 1941 in Sioux City Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Helen (Twohig) Clemens.

Carol graduated from Mercy High School in Omaha, Nebraska in 1960. She married Thomas B. Fitzgibbons in 1962 and together moved to Fargo, North Dakota in 1963 to raise their family.

Carol dedicated her life to her family and supporting her children in their education and extra curricular interests. She had been involved in many of her children’s activities to include attending sporting and theatrical events. Carol even played “coach” for her children’s youth baseball and softball teams.

Carol moved to Sioux Falls in 2001. She loved to spend time with her “extended family” which includes the many nieces and nephews that live in the Sioux Falls area. Carol has also traveled the country to spend time with her brothers and sisters and her many nieces and nephews that live in Sioux City, Omaha, Houston, and throughout the United States. She loved to read and cook and took pride in baking her famous banana bread which she shared with many.

Carol made many lasting friendships with those she worked with in Fargo and Sioux Falls. She worked for St. Lukes / Merit Care hospital and at Hornbacher’s grocery store in Fargo. Carol also worked for Sioux Falls Catholic Schools until her retirement.

Carol is survived by four children, John Patrick (J.P.) Fitzgibbons of Minneapolis, MN, Anne Marie (Frank) Oliveto of Osprey, FL, Michael Fitzgibbons (Cindy) of Farmington, MN, and Daniel (Paige) Fitzgibbons of Minneapolis, MN, two brothers Dr. Richard P.(Mary Ann) Clemens of Omaha, NE, and William Clemens of Sioux City Iowa, a sister Theresa (Michael) Darby of Tekamah, Nebraska, five grandchildren, Alexis Fitzgibbons, Christopher Fitzgibbons, Hannah Fitzgibbons Jack Fitzgibbons and Grace Fitzgibbons, one great-grandchild, Ronan Fitzgibbons and many nieces and nephews that loved her very much. Carol was preceded in death by her parents John and Helen Clemens, her two brothers, Joseph Clemens and John Clemens, her sister Gerry Dougherty, her husband Tom Fitzgibbons, and two sons, Joseph and Thomas, Jr.

Carol’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the Intensive Care staff at Avera McKennan hospital for their compassion, quality care and genuineness.

The funeral service will be held for Carol on Thursday, March 17, at 11:00 am at St Mary Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A memorial will be held on Friday, March 18, at Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo followed by burial service at Holy Cross Cemetery on Saturday, March 19, at 10:00am.
