Life Legacy

James (Jim) Lowell Haugse, 69, went to the Lord on September 4, 2011. Jim was born in Tyler, MN on November 14, 1941, to Albert and Isabel Haugse. He was baptized on December 7, 1941. Jim grew up in Sioux Falls, SD and graduated from Washington Senior High in 1959. Other than the Lord, nothing was more important than family to Jim.

In 1960, Jim went to St. Louis, MO to live and work with his brother, Len, where he met his wife of 48 years, Phyllis Joyce Barton. They married September 23, 1961. Jim and Phyllis moved to California in 1977, where they raised their family, their four children, Kevin, Keith, Kyle and Kimball "Jimmy".

Throughout his life, Jim worked as a police officer in Sioux Falls, served in the United States Air Force, drove semi-trucks, and finished his career working in Aerospace in California, retiring in 2005. Jim enjoyed life to the fullest. He raced cars in Sioux Falls and Valley Park, Missouri. His favorite pastimes were camping, fishing, and watching Nascar.

Known for being a jack-of-all-trades, Jim could fix anything and often would fix things for anyone in need. He was proud of many things, especially his Norwegian heritage. After his wife's passing in 2009, he returned to Sioux Falls to be with his siblings.

He is preceded in death by three of his four sons, Kevin, Keith and Kyle; his lovely wife, Phyllis; and both of his parents. Jim is survived by Kimbell "Jimmy" and Rebeca of Arizona; three grandchildren, Stephan, Nick and Amanda; his siblings and their spouses, Kenneth and Cindy, Audrey DeWitt, Janet and Jerry Kaufman, Silvia and Smiley Miles, all of Sioux Falls, Vonnie Silvis and Leonard and Erna, from Florida; and his wonderfully caring girlfriend, Jennie Brown.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 7, 2011Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue. Visitation with the family present will be from 10:30 to 1:00 pm Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home, 5067 S. Main Avenue.
