Life Legacy

Bob Vanderlinde, avid outdoorsman and career mail carrier, died November 1, 2010, in Sioux Falls, SD. He was 82.

Robert Lee Vanderlinde was born June 11, 1928, in Cottonwood, SD, to John and Martha (Lemkey) Vanderlinde. He moved to Sioux Falls, SD as a young boy where he attended Whittier Jr. High and graduated from Washington Senior High School. As World War II was escalating in 1946, Bob joined the US Army and served in Japan as a paratrooper. The recipient of two medals, he tragically broke his back in Japan and received his honorable discharge in 1948, following the accident. He then attended the University of Sioux Falls and Dunwoody Community College in Minneapolis.

On August 1, 1949, Bob was united in marriage with Mary Hudgel. He began working with the US Postal Service as a mail carrier. In addition to his career, he was involved in several business ventures. He retired from Postal Service after 32 years. Following his retirement, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf and spending time with his family. A highlight of his life was training and hunting with his black Labs – all affectionately named "Mud". Together, Mary and Bob enjoyed years of traveling throughout the world and particularly enjoyed trips to Europe, Panama, Switzerland and Ireland.

He was a member of the National Association of Mail Carriers, VFW, Elks, DAV, and Ducks Unlimited; was past President of the Minnehaha Sportsmen's Club (77-78), Sioux Falls Wildlife Federation where he served as District Director (79-80) and was past President (81-83). Bob was the recipient of the Conservationist of the Year Award in 1989, and the Legislative Award in 1989 from the Minnehaha Sportsmen's Club – an award he received for his work in helping with wildlife issues. Bob will be forever remembered for his never-ending volume of jokes and his warm sense of humor.

Grateful for having shared his life are his sons, Robert Vanderlinde (Diane), Colton, SD, Paul Vanderlinde (Marla), Brandon, SD, Jim Vanderlinde (Sharon), Sioux Falls, SD; daughters, Alice Petersen (Alan), Centerville, OH, Martha Vanderlinde (Chris Christensen), Sioux Falls, SD, Mary James (Rob Roy), Renner, SD; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Harold Vanderlinde (Edo), of Spokane, WA.
