Dr. Peter Harlan Wierenga

March 11, 1924 - December 15, 2012


Peter Harlan Wierenga, formerly of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away suddenly at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia Saturday morning, December 15, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn Ostraat Wierenga; son, Dr. Bruce (Debra) Harlan, Mason City, Iowa; daughters, Lorie (Dave) Barrett, and Julie (Don Soechting) Harlan, all of Charlottesville; grandsons, Eric Peter Harlan, Sioux Falls, Thomas (Amber) Harlan, Burnsville, Minnesota, Mark Harlan Soechting, Charlottesville; and granddaughters, Maggie Shipe, Baltimore, Maryland, and Marta Soechting, Charlottesville; twin great-grandsons, Alexander and Owen Harlan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Henrietta Anna Wierenga; and grandson Steven Bruce Harlan.

Dr. Wierenga was born in the family home on March 11, 1924 in Monroe, South Dakota to Peter Henry Wierenga and Teda Klinger Wierenga. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1942 and served three years in the U.S. Coast Guard as a radar operator on the USS Admiral W.L. Capps (Attack Passenger-121), which regularly transported over 5,000 troops from San Francisco to and from the Pacific Islands during WWII. In the spring of 1946, upon discharge from service at Norfolk, Virginia, he enrolled at Augustana College in Sioux Falls and later received a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minneapolis. In 1951, Dr. Wierenga became associated with Dr. George Tjaden in Sioux Falls. Twelve years later, he built and opened the Wierenga Chiropractic Clinic in downtown Sioux Falls. He retired to Charlottesville in 2000 to the home he and his wife built a few years previously.

A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Friday, December 21, 2012, at the
Miller Funeral Home Chapel. Internment will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, PO Box 160, Charlottesville, VA 22902; College of Chiropractic Scholarship Fund, Northwestern Health Sciences, 2501 W. 84th St, Bloomington, MN 55431 or Augustana College in Sioux Falls.
