Obituary

Dr. Alfonso "Al" Remedios, age 97, passed away peacefully with his loving wife, Gina, by his side at Ava's House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

Al was born to Fernando and Carmen d'Almada Remedios in Hong Kong on May 10, 1927. He first came to the United States in 1947 to attend undergraduate college at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington and Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated with a medical degree from McGill Medical School in Montreal, Canada in 1953.

At the beginning of his career, he was a general practitioner in Hong Kong for five years. In 1960, Al married Georgina McDougall, his devoted wife of 64 years. He and Gina immigrated to the United States, and he began specialty training in Pathology at the University of Washington in Seattle. Upon completion of his training, he worked as a pathologist at Decatur Memorial Hospital, in Decatur, Illinois for 27 years. During the last thirteen years, before retirement, he served as the head Clinical Pathologist of the Laboratory Department. Al was well respected by his staff and colleagues.

He retired in 1992 and moved with Georgina to Sioux Falls in 2003 to be closer to their family. They made new friends and supported the community. He was always an avid golfer and was able to enjoy many more rounds of golf until the age of ninety-two. His other interests included watching sports and eating his wife's cooking.

Al was devoted to his wife and family. He was passionate about his work. He was always a man of integrity, generosity, patriotism, and strong faith. His curiosity led to a desire to learn as much as he could throughout his entire life. He also took every opportunity to teach and lead by example.  He will be deeply missed. May his soul rest in peace in God's kingdom.

He is survived by his wife, Gina, and their daughters, Monica Sheehan (Larry) of Omaha, NE, and their children Matthew and Elizabeth, Anna Gauer (Keith) of Sioux Falls and their children Jillian and Nicholas Gauer. He is also survived by his brother, Dino, living in Sydney, Australia. He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Philip, Edward, and Carlos and two sisters, Therese Wiegers and Sister Bernardine Remedios.
