Alice Kathryne Orth was born January 6th, 1956, in Strasburg, ND to Sebastian and Philipina (Burgad) Selzler. She attended Strasburg public schools and graduated from Strasburg Public High School in 1974 moving to Pierre, SD after graduation.
Alice was united in marriage to Perry Orth on December 4, 1976, in Eureka, SD. There they resided for 2 years, working road construction in the summer and the oil fields in Dickenson, ND. The young couple then moved to Frederick, SD. They then used the flip of a coin to decide whether to move to Rapid City or Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1979 they took up residence in Sioux Falls, where Alice was a bartender at a variety of places, including Taco Villa and Time Out. The couple became parents in 1982 when their son, Doty, was born, followed by the birth of their daughter, Bridget, in 1988. Alice worked at Sioux Valley Hospital, Hutchinson Technology, and during her career at Premier Bank Card, she also worked evenings at HyVee. Alice retired in 2021 after 22 years working in customer service at Premier Bank Card.
Alice, affectionately known as Ali, enjoyed spending her free time gardening and canning, one year canning over 100 quarts of stewed tomatoes and salsa. She loved preparing meals for her family and often hosted large holiday gatherings that included friends. She also enjoyed crocheting and knitting. When time allowed, she could be found reading and staying up late watching TV. There was always a four-legged kid running around, either a dog or a cat. She also cared for the other family pets including birds, rabbits, turtles, snakes, rats, hamsters, and fish.
Ali was a gentle soul who always strived her best to provide for her family, at times sacrificing her own needs for others. She also provided a great atmosphere with the limited resources available to her. She made many friends over her lifetime, too many to list. Alice was able to live out the last few months of her life at home due to the appreciated assistance of friends, specifically her neighbors, Laura and Raul Cabrera.
Alice is survived by her devoted husband, Perry; son, Doty Orth (Jennifer), Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Bridget Orth (Tony Roth), Mitchell, SD; and 5 grandchildren, Zoey, Zane, Kira, Casen, and Karsen; brother Myron Selzler (Joan), Bemidji, MN.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ann Wharton and Ester Jacob; and a brother, Julius Selzler.
