Alida Ver Burg, age 90, of Brandon, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her family.

A funeral service will take place at 3:00 PM, with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM, on Monday, May 19, 2025, at Community Reformed Church, located at 6800 E. 41st Street, Sioux Falls, SD. Interment will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Valley Springs, South Dakota.

Alida (Haak) Ver Burg was born on July 9, 1934, to Abraham and Cornelia (Van Bemmel) Haak on a farm in Lyon County, Iowa. At a young age, Alida placed her faith in Jesus Christ, a decision that would guide her every step. She believed she was called to reflect God's love and kindness to all she met, a calling she fulfilled faithfully throughout her life.

Her family moved to Hills, Minnesota, during her childhood, where she later graduated from high school in 1952. After working for a year at Fikse Produce, she married her high school sweetheart, Alvin Ver Burg, in 1953. Together, they embarked on a lifetime of ministry and adventure.

Their first move took them to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Alvin attended college and seminary. Alida attended Reformed Bible College and worked for Interstate Trucking Company and Pine Rest Christian Hospital. After the birth of their first child, she embraced her new calling as a stay-at-home mother, a role she cherished and lived out with deep devotion.

In 1960, Alida and Alvin moved to Edson, Alberta, Canada, where Alvin pastored and Alida became active in women's ministries, children's programs, and Bible studies. Their journey later brought them to Phoenix, Arizona, Omaha, Nebraska, and several communities in South Dakota. As Alvin ministered, Alida stood beside him as a constant and faithful partner, offering encouragement, hospitality, and care.

After her children were grown, Alida worked at Raven Industries in Sioux Falls and later at Pleasant Valley School, a facility for special needs children in Sturgis, South Dakota. Whether at home, in the church, or at work, Alida lived with grace, purpose, and unwavering faith.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Alida was a gifted cook and baker—her fresh bread, rolls, and cinnamon rolls were Saturday staples. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and reading, but above all, she treasured time with her family. Her quiet strength, daily Bible study, and heartfelt prayers left a lasting legacy of faith. A cup of coffee, a hymn on her lips, and time at the dining room table with loved ones brought her great joy.

Alida is survived by her six children, Steve (Cindy) Ver Burg of Hartford, SD, Pat (Wayne) Sprecher of Sioux Falls, SD, Tim (Jennifer) Ver Burg of Gillette, WY, Brenda Thornton of Brandon, SD, Dan (Allison) Ver Burg of Moorcroft, WY, and Kristi (Jim) Westra of Sioux Falls, SD. Alida is also survived by her 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Alida was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alvin Ver Burg, her parents, Abraham and Cornelia, and three siblings.

Her family rejoices in knowing that she is now in the presence of her Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she loved and served with her whole heart.
