Barbara Joanne Harding was born on March 28, 1932, to Robert and Anna (Baker) Harding in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She attended public school, where she participated in swimming and was a member of the diving team. Barbara graduated from Washington High School in 1950. While in high school, she met her future husband Norm in a study hall, beginning a lifelong partnership. Norm gave her his ID bracelet, and they went steady.

On July 28, 1950, Barbara married Norman E. Hines in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Together, the couple raised their three daughters, Sallianne, Mary, and Julie, creating a loving family environment that also included many dogs, instilling in their daughters a love for animals of all kinds.

Barbara worked as an administrative assistant for the Farmers Home Administration for many years. After her time at the FHA, she became an administrative assistant at the Federal Probation Office.

In the early 1970s, Barb and Norm purchased a vacation home on Blue Dog Lake, where they enjoyed time with family and friends—fishing, playing cards and board games, and relaxing. During these years, Barbara cherished her family's school and church activities, always placing her loved ones at the center of her life. As a grandmother, she delighted in baking cookies for her grandchildren, hosting sleepovers and movie nights, playing card games like Kings' Corner, and creating treasured summer memories with her grandkids in the backyard swimming pool and on the slip-n-slide.

In her spare time, Barb enjoyed sewing dresses for her daughters, teaching the grandkids to embroider dish towels, and tending to her flower gardens. She and Norm also loved traveling together, particularly cherishing their trips to Spain and Australia.

Barbara was a member of WELCA, the local Business Women's Association, and the BPW (International Federation of Business and Professional Women). Barb also attended many Elk's Club dinners and events with Norm.

She is survived by her daughters: Sallianne Hines of Huron, SD, and Mary Lee (and her husband John) of Brandon, SD. Barbara also leaves behind five grandchildren—Daniel Goetz, Carson Lee, Elizabeth Goetz, Abigail Goetz, and Kathryn Swank (and her husband David)—and eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Additionally, she is survived by her sisters-in-law, Sally Ann Hines and Lenna Harding, and her son-in-law, Michael O'Hara, and several nieces and nephews.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Anna Harding; her in-laws William Daniel "Dan" and Matilda Hines; her daughter Julie Hines O'Hara; her sister LuRee Harding-Sperry and her spouse Jim; her brothers Clint Harding and his wife Mildred, Bruce Harding, and Roger Harding and his wife Betty; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Charles Hines and his wife Betty; her brother-in-law George Hines; and her beloved husband of 72 years, Norman E. Hines.

A Memorial Service will be held at noon, with a visitation beginning at 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Miller Funeral Home – downtown, 507 S. Main Avenue, Sioux Falls.
