Barbara Messer died in her home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on November 18th, 2025, with her pet cat Mali and her caregivers by her side. She was 81 years old.

Barbara Vacura was born on August 8th, 1944, in Michigan to Joseph and Mabel (nee Ward) Vacura. She married Robert Messer Sr. in Jackson, Minnesota on April 12th, 1963, moved to Windom, Minnesota, and gave birth to her child, Robert Messer Jr., on August 12th the same year. Barb and the family pioneered the work to restore the library in town. Barb resided in Windom until her son moved out, then she moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and worked as a grant writer there. Barb also moved her mother in with her near the end of her life to care for her more closely.

Barb was known for her appreciation of various art, ranging from finely made furniture to soft oil paintings of the vast midwest plains. She was a skilled lady, having dipped her toes into many forms of creation. She was a life long sketcher, tried out painting and claywork, china staining, sewing, gold leafing, and made, what her grandchildren remember the most, her beautiful holiday ornaments.

She also had love for nature and wildlife, having been a companion to various rescue pets throughout her life. She enjoyed learning about history, especially that of her family's, and traveling. Both these interests blossomed together on her many trips to Europe and around the United States throughout her life.

Barb is survived by her son, Bob (Farmington, MN); her grandchildren Alex and Sarah (Shakopee, MN); and her cat, Mali (Shakopee, MN). She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Mabel.
