Byron Allan Kroeger, known affectionately to family as Butch or Butchie, passed away on August 17, 2026, at the age of 74.

A lifelong resident of Lakefield, Minnesota, Byron was born on February 13, 1952, in the same community where he would spend his entire life and become one of its most familiar and well-known voices. Byron graduated from Lakefield High School, class of 1970, and went on to attend the University of Minnesota, where he studied journalism. That education laid the foundation for a career rooted in storytelling and community connection.

He wrote articles for the Worthington Globe and became a recognized figure in local journalism through his weekly column in the Lakefield Standard, titled "By The Way," where readers came to rely on his keen observations and wealth of knowledge. He spent many hours collecting historical facts about the city and helped write Lakefield’s 125th Celebration book. Those who knew Byron understood that conversation was one of his greatest gifts. He was a walking encyclopedia, always ready to share facts, figures, and fascinating tidbits on nearly any subject. Whether at a local gathering or a chance meeting on the street, Byron could hold court with warmth and enthusiasm, leaving people both entertained and better informed.

In his younger years, Byron was an avid hunter and spent considerable time on Heron Lake, where he served as a guide for duck hunters. His love of the outdoors complemented a rich collection of indoor passions. He was a devoted collector of baseball, football, and basketball cards, along with stamps and rare coins. Baseball held a special place in his heart, and his knowledge of the sport was as deep as his collections were vast. He used this love and knowledge to run an online eBay business until the day he passed.

Byron never married, choosing instead a life shaped by his own interests, his community, and the company of those around him. He remained in Lakefield throughout his years, a constant and familiar presence in the town he called home.

He was preceded in death by his mom (Laurene) and dad (Leroy) and a brother, Duane Kroeger. Byron is survived by his brother, Darvin Kroeger ( wife Jeanie), his sisters, Janet Hanselman (husband Denny) and Lori Hassebroek (husband Stan), and his brother Duane’s wife (Janelle). He is also survived by his 12 nieces/nephews and 10 grand nieces/nephews, all of whom he really adored, as he had no children of his own. There will be no formal funeral service. A celebration of life will be held at a future date to gather and remember Byron and the many conversations, stories, and facts he so generously shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him.
