Catherine "Cathy" Ann Maxwell, age 64, passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, September 5, 2025 at her home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 12, 2025 at St. Michael Catholic Church (1600 S. Marion Rd., Sioux Falls, SD). Family will be present for visitation from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 11, 2025 also at St. Michael Catholic Church, with a wake service beginning at 6:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sioux Falls Humane Society or a charity of your choosing.

Cathy was born July 8, 1961 at Omaha, Nebraska. She grew up in Omaha where she received her education, graduating from Mercy High School. During her high school years, Cathy served as class vice president and spent a lot of time traveling with her parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She attended many concerts with her mother, even having close encounters with figures like Elvis and Michael Jackson.

She eventually went on to receive her bachelor's degree in social work at Creighton University in Omaha Nebraska. During her twenties, she was scouted for modeling and beauty pageants, eventually earning the title of Miss Bellevue.  Throughout this time, she modeled in various local and regional magazines.

On March 20, 1993, Cathy was united with Frank Maxwell in marriage. The couple lived in Omaha, having four children during this time. After having their third child, Catherine became a stay-at-home mom.

The family relocated to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in June 2000 where Cathy and Frank welcomed their fifth and final child. Cathy spent the next 25 years being an involved mother, wife and member of the community. She was at every school event - showing up hours early to ensure she secured the front row with her camera. She volunteered in all of the elementary school classrooms. She made countless homemade birthday cakes and chocolate chip cookies. She decorated the house to the nines for every holiday - often surprising her kids when they came home from school with the spectacles.

Cathy was a talented woman, with many hobbies including stamping/card-making, photography, and baking. Her cards often earned the accolades of many in the stamping community, with whom she interacted.

In 2016, Frank passed away suddenly. With that life change, she began working for the first time in 25 years. She followed her passion of baking and began work at Oh My Cupcakes! in Sioux Falls South Dakota. She then moved to work at CorTrust Bank 2018 where she was a teller and front desk receptionist.

In 2019, Cathy was diagnosed with colon cancer. Her prognosis given was up to 5 years, but she persevered - making it 6.5 years. During this time, she continued with her hobbies and spent lots of time with her children. After countless treatments and surgeries, she made the brave decision to end treatment - opting to spend time with her children doing the things she loved instead of spending that time in hospitals.

Her and her children traveled to New York City in July 2024 where she made the most of every minute - never stopping for a break and walking over 10 miles each day. In May 2025, she attended her son's wedding where she gave an amazing speech, and spent time talking to friends and family and danced the night away.

Cathy spent her final days in the care of her children and her beloved dog, Stevie, opting for in-home hospice. She faced the end with an endless amount of positivity. She had hope for the next day - always planning the next project to tackle, from making a black cake to dipping various treats with "the best chocolate in the world." She watched Downton Abbey and played video games with her kids - even winning, once. When she passed, she was surrounded by the people she loved most - her kids, their spouses, and her father.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Frankie Maxwell of Sioux Falls, Haley (Ben) Schulenberg of Kansas City, MO, Sam (Laura) Maxwell of Minneapolis, MN, Kelly Maxwell of Sioux Falls, and Nick Maxwell of Sioux Falls. She is also survived by her father, Samuel Jimenez of Omaha, Nebraska and many other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Maxwell, her mother, Mercedes Jimenez, and her grandparents, Albert and Guadalupe Alcaraz.
