With heavy hearts, we remember and celebrate the life of Costel Diaconu—a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and a man who meant so much to so many.
Costel Diaconu was born on February 11, 1961, in Romania. From an early age, he embodied the values that would define his life: hard work, determination, generosity, and an unwavering devotion to family. As a young man, he worked as a merchandiser and assisted with operating a bakery in Romania, demonstrating the entrepreneurial spirit and strong work ethic that would remain with him throughout his life.
In 1989, Costel married the love of his life, Valerica. Together they built a life centered around love, commitment, and family. In 1993, with courage and hope for a better future, Costel immigrated to the United States. Arriving without knowing English, he first settled in Chicago and worked in carpentry. In 1994, he moved his family to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he would spend the rest of his life building a home and future for the people he loved most.
Costel later became a truck driver, spending countless hours on the road and away from home. No matter where he was, his thoughts were always with his family. He loved his wife and children more than anything. Everything he did was for them and worked hard, often putting their needs before his own. He was the ultimate provider and fully supported his children Cornel, Loredana, and Steven and encouraged them to follow their own paths. No matter what they were facing, he was there to listen, offer advice, and help however he could.
He loved talking, telling stories, giving advice, and staying connected to the people he cared about. Costel had a great sense of humor and loved making people laugh. Whether he was telling stories, cracking jokes, or teasing someone he cared about, he always brought smiles to those around him. He had a way of making people feel welcome, and nobody stayed a stranger for long.
Costel loved being surrounded by family and friends and was often the one bringing laughter and energy to every gathering. He especially enjoyed traditional Romanian meals lovingly prepared by his wife. If there was music playing, there was a good chance Costel would be dancing. He loved celebrating life's moments, big and small, and believed that time spent together was something to be cherished. Many of our favorite memories are of holidays, family gatherings, and simply being together while having meaningful conversations.
Costel also had a special love for animals, especially his beloved pets. Even while traveling across the country, he would regularly check on them and often ask for video calls just to see how they were doing. It was one of the many ways he showed how big his heart truly was.
On June 17, 2026, Costel passed away, leaving behind a tremendous void in the lives of those who loved him. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, children, family members, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
While our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the years we had with him, the lessons he taught us, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely.
His love was endless, his heart was generous, and his presence will never be forgotten.
Forever loved, forever missed, forever remembered.
