Our wonderful husband, father, and brother, Daniel Gerard Tynan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died on March 4, 2025, after a short battle with brain cancer.

Dan was born on September 13, 1960, in River Forest, IL. He was the beloved husband of Mary Anne; loving father of Sabrina Frances and Brody William, and step-father of Gabrielle Anne Ammann; beloved brother of William (Susan), Deborah (Stephen) Klemawesch, Tracey, Marie, David (Linda), and Monica Maria. His family is so grateful and blessed to have had him in their lives. His parents, William and Frances, and brother Christopher Michael preceded him in death.

Dan graduated from Oak Park-River Forest High School, where he was a member of the hockey team. He attended the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana and the University of Illinois Medical School. He completed his general surgery internship and neurosurgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, from 1986 to 1992.  He trained with some of the giants in the field, including Thoralf Sundt, David Piepgras, and Burt Onofrio. Dan was chief resident from 1991-1992 and was then recruited to practice in St. Paul, Minnesota, before relocating to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he built a successful practice, met Mary, and they created a beautiful family and life.

Dan was a brilliant, gifted, and selfless neurosurgeon who went the extra mile for his patients. His peers often consulted him on challenging diagnoses, and he often assisted and mentored them during their surgeries. Despite the hour, he was 'on call' for any doctor, nurse or friend who needed him.  Dan was a generous and compassionate man who cared deeply about the welfare of everyone he met. His keen intellect and curiosity, sense of humor and wit, and fiery Irish personality were traits that set Dan apart from the common man. He never sought the company or approval of the influential and powerful, but was content to march to the beat of his own drum. He also provided his family with daily doses of laughter.  Dan's loves in life included his family, friends, hockey, golf, spending time with Mary, Sabrina, Brody, and Gabrielle, and his study of neurosurgery. He enjoyed a life rich in countless friendships, unerring faith in Christ, and abundant love. He leaves a massive void in the lives of all of those who loved him so deeply, and we feel eternally blessed to have been a part of his life.  We will never forget him and eagerly anticipate the day when we are reunited in Heaven.

The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 10, 2025, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 521 N. Duluth Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57105. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls, SD 57104. Interment will be private.
