Darlene Jean
Symes
Feb 28, 1931 — Apr 1, 2026
Sioux Falls
Darlene Jean Symes, a lifelong resident of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, at the age of 95, surrounded by her family at the Dougherty Hospice House.
Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Saturday, August 8, 2026 at Miller Funeral Home (Downtown Location) 507 S. Main Ave. Sioux Falls, SD
Born in 1931 in Harrisburg to Luther and Mildred (Hummel) Prentice, Darlene was a cherished presence across the many communities she was part of in Sioux Falls. A proud member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Cooties, and the Center for Active Generations, she was always ready to lend a hand or brighten someone's day.
Darlene's quick wit and feisty spirit were part of what made her so special, and she had a way of making people smile—often when they least expected it. After retiring from Taco John's at the age of 82, she spent her time baking treats for local fundraisers and making sure all of the neighborhood squirrels were roly-poly and well-fed ("and such is that"). Her generosity and vibrant presence leave behind a legacy that will be remembered by all who knew her.
She will be dearly missed by her children, Mike Symes, Larry Symes, Deb (Steve) Lias, and Carol (Bruce) Christiansen; and by her grandchildren—Scott Symes, Chloe (Levi) Lowell, Stevie (Jason) Shea, and Josh Symes. Mike, in particular, was an important part of her life, and their time together meant the world to her.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, George Symes, and her beloved canine companion, Dixie.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the kind and devoted caregivers at the Dougherty Hospice House. Their compassion and care brought comfort and peace to Darlene and her loved ones in her final days.
