David A. Maddox, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society – Sioux Falls Village. He was 80 years old.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 28, 2024, at Hope Lutheran Church, 1700 South Cliff Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD. A visitation with family present to greet friends will occur from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at Miller Westside Chapel, 6200 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls, SD.

David Allen Maddox was born on November 17, 1943, to Wilber Allen and Margaret (Lilyquist) Maddox in the South Side of Chicago during World War II. At the age of seven, his family relocated to Downers Grove, a suburb of Chicago, where he attended Puffer Elementary School and graduated from Downers Grove North High School in 1961.

After graduation, Dave pursued higher education, earning a double bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Biology from Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois, in 1966. In 1967, he attended graduate school at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM, for one year before transferring to the University of Iowa, where he received his Ph.D. in Physiology in 1973.

While studying as an undergraduate, Dave met his future wife, Kathy, at Blackburn College. They were married on June 10, 1967, and were blessed with two children, Mike and Susan.

In August 1972, the family moved to San Francisco, where Dave completed his Ph.D. thesis and participated in a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Barry Brenner for two years. He then spent six years working with Dr. Floyd Rector Jr. at the University of California, San Francisco. In 1980, the family moved to Burlington, Vermont, where Dave joined the University of Vermont School of Medicine, working with Dr. F. John Gennari for the next 15 years. In 1995, he returned to the Midwest, settling in Sioux Falls, SD, where he became part of the School of Medicine. Dave concluded his career as the Coordinator of Research and Development at the VA Medical Center and as a Professor of Internal Medicine and Basic Biomedical Science at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Over his 45 years of kidney research, Dave authored several chapters for medical books and publications. He retired in August 2013.

In 2020, Dave bravely received a double lung transplant at the University of Iowa. This marked a significant milestone, as he was the 199th recipient of this life-saving procedure from that hospital and the oldest double lung transplant recipient in the United States. After his transplant, Dave was able to enjoy an additional four years and two days of life, cherishing every moment with his loved ones. His journey is a testament to resilience and hope.

Dave was actively involved in his community. He cherished volunteering with organizations such as the Banquet of Sioux Falls and Lunch Is Served. He was a member of the Sioux Emperians Barbershop Chorus, the Sioux Falls Morning Optimist Club, the Hope Lutheran Church choir, and the bell choir. Additionally, he served as the Treasurer for the Sioux Falls Chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) association and the Great Plains Medical Research Foundation, a non-profit organization affiliated with the VA Medical Center.

Family was everything to Dave. He treasured his time spent with his children and granddaughter. An animal lover, he adored dogs, especially his beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Tucker, and his Golden Retriever, Rider. Music was another of Dave's passions; he loved being involved in various choirs and had a long-standing desire to learn the piano. Dave had a positive outlook on life, and even in his later years, he greeted visitors with a steady smile and warm welcome.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan (Rod) Harms of Chancellor, SD; his granddaughter, Jane Harms (and her fiancé, Keagan Eirikson) of Madison, SD; and his sister, Sue (Larry) Shire of Three Rivers, Michigan.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Wilber and Margaret Maddox; his wife, Kathy Maddox; his sister, Karen Esau, and brother-in-law, Dwight Esau; and his son, Michael Maddox.

In memory of David Maddox, the family kindly requests that, instead of flowers, donations be made to the National Kidney Research or the Humane Society of Sioux Falls.
