Obituary

David Walter Scarbrough, 60, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away at home on September 30, 2025.

Dave was born on January 5, 1965 in Sioux Falls, SD, to Alva and Mary Lee (Syverson) Scarbrough. He grew up in Sioux Falls, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1983 and Augustana University with a Bachelor's degree.

Dave loved the Green Bay Packers, BBC shows like Doctor Who and Downton Abbey, and trying new recipes. He was a music lover, both as a listener and as a musician himself. He had composed several solo albums throughout his life, as well as being a member of several bands such as The Harvesters, Violet, and Ill Bill & The Spinal Chills. He also participated in Themestock, where musicians around the globe composed and performed music around a theme, both virtually and in-person. In 2024, he was inducted into the South Dakota Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Dave is survived by his daughters, Hannah Scarbrough, Sioux Falls, SD, and Alice Hulett, Seneca, SC; his siblings, Mary Scarbrough Hunt, St. Louis Park, MN, Susan Scarbrough Syverson, Lund, Sweden, and Steven Scarbrough, Amsterdam, Netherlands. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, his family would love if you would listen or share his music, donate/purchase instruments for public schools, or donate to local charities and non-profits such as LifeScape (help for children and adults with disabilities), St. Francis House and other homeless shelters, or addiction treatment, recovery, and rehabilitation centers.

Services expected in Spring 2026.
