Donald Dwight
Capen
Mar 26, 1943 — Apr 8, 2025
Sioux Falls
Donald "Don" Dwight Capen, Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on April 8, 2025 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls. He was 82.
Don was born to Grace and Dwight Capen on March 26, 1943, in Sioux Falls, SD. He spent his youth in Sioux Falls, where he graduated from Washington Senior High School in 1960. He joined the US Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. He had a Marine Buddy, Mike Nolan, who became a lifelong friend. Don worked for several companies, including Brown Boveri Electric and ITE, which took him away from Sioux Falls temporarily. He returned to Sioux Falls to care for his mother in her illness. During that time, Don drove a cab for the Yellow Cab Company and Metro Cab.
From the early days of coaching a youth baseball team to the present days, his nephew, Todd Reistroffer, has "walked the walk of life" with him. Don had an African Gray parrot named Simon, who was his world.
Don lived by his life's motto, "It is far better to light a candle than to curse the darkness."
Grateful for having shared his life are his sisters, Carol Lee Reistroffer of Tualatin, Oregon, Leora Anne Bass of Arlington, Washington, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Grace Viola (Allen) Capen and Dwight Donald Capen, and his sister, Constance Elain.
Committal Services will take place at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 11, 2025, at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD.
