Obituary

Doris Swanson, went home to be with the Lord September 30, 2026. She was 101.

Visitation with the family present will be from 1 to 3pm on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at the Miller Funeral Home Downtown Chapel, 507 South Main Avenue. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Monday, October 5, 2026, at the Downtown Chapel with burial at Hills Of Rest Cemetery. The service will be live-streamed Doris' Service

Doris was born November 17, 1924 at home on the farm in Hanson County, SD to John and Martha (Heitzman) Weber. She attended country school and graduated from Emery High School.

Doris moved to Sioux Falls where she met Harold Swanson at Central Baptist Church. They were married on July 3, 1948, and were blessed with 4 children.

Doris worked in retail at Fantles, Shrivers, and was at Crossroads Book & Music for 25 years. She was a member of Central Baptist Church where she served faithfully for 80 years. She was on many committees, including chairman of the wedding committee. She also worked in the church library, and was very passionate about missions.

Doris and Harold loved to travel. They had the opportunity to go to Japan to visit Harold’s brother and family, who were missionaries there. They also traveled to many parts of the United States, to visit family and friends. Doris loved to crochet, read, do puzzles, and was a great baker and cook.

She dearly loved her family and would always go the extra mile for them. She cared for her mother while she was dying of cancer, and in later years, cared for Harold while he was battling Alzheimer’s disease. Her faith never wavered, no matter the circumstances.

Grateful for sharing her life are her daughters, Linda (Perry) Schempp, Ann Swanson, and daughter-in-law Janet (Lee) Lensegrav. 8 grandchildren: Rachel (Bill) Ballard, Michael (Amber) Akland, Ben (Caitlin) Schempp, Leah (Joe) Orr, Melissa (Trevor) Akland, Kami (Matt) Weber, Callie (Korey) Muth, and Heather Lensegrav, 9 great-grandchildren: Vivian, Norah, Brinley, Emmie, Stassi, Annie, Booker, Zoey, and Mia. Also surviving are 2 sisters, Marian Phillips, and LuAnn Warner, and sister-in-law Charlotte Weber.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, her parents, infant daughter Judy, son Steve, her step-mom, a sister and brother, and many brothers & sisters in-laws.
