Duane Coatsworth, 86, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away on Thursday, December 11, at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, SD.

Visitation with the family present to greet family and friends will be from 4:00 – 6:00 pm on Tuesday, December 16, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave.

Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, December 17, at St. Michael Parish, 1600 S. Marion Road.  There will be an internment at St. Michael Cemetery at a later date.

Duane Dean Coatsworth, son of Milo and Florence (Wier) Coatsworth, was born on August 1, 1939 in the family home in Spencer, SD. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Harold Kellogg. He grew up in Spencer where he earned the affectionate nickname "Puff" and graduated from Spencer High School in 1957. During his high school days, Duane participated in many sports. He was part of a record-setting 6-man football team. The team consisted of only 12 players and during the season, they outscored opponents 192-54, going undefeated and winning the Cornbelt Conference title.

Duane worked for Raven Industries for most of his career in many different roles. One of his proudest moments was being selected in 1974 to be part of the Raven team supporting Malcom Forbes in his Atlantic Project. Forbes wanted to be the first to cross the Atlantic in a balloon. Duane was sent to Santa Ana Marine Corps Air Station in California to provide technical assistance.

He was a member of St Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls for many years, and most-recently a member of St Michael Parish in Sioux Falls. He attended mass regularly until health issues prevented his attendance.

Duane supported his children in their endeavors, whether it be coaching sports, helping with school projects, homework, or anything they needed help with. He loved playing golf and was part of the Raven golf league for many years. He also played golf with family and friends whenever possible. Duane and Joyce enjoyed traveling in their retirement and loved watching ball games, especially great nieces and nephews in softball, volleyball, and basketball.

Duane married Joyce Kunkel on May 29th 1959 at the Church of the Epiphany Catholic Church in Epiphany SD. To this union were born twin daughters, Sherry and Shelly and a son, Troy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce of 60 years; his parents, Harold and Florence Kellogg; in laws, Leo and Lucille Kunkel; a sister, Lavon Ginter and her husband, Ron; and sister-in-law, Carol Lee Tuschen.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Sherry Andrews, Shelly Becker (Jerry Ramm) and Troy (Heidi) Coatsworth, all of Sioux Falls, SD; a sister-in-law, Lisa (Ron) Roskens, Emery SD; a brother-in-law, Kenny (Jan) Tuschen, Farmer SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
