Dwane Matthies, a devoted family man, farmer, and lifelong resident of Hartford, SD, died on March 6, 2025, in Denton, Texas, at the age of 94.

Born on December 10, 1930, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to William "WC" and Meta (Muchow) Matthies, Dwane developed a passion for the land and a strong work ethic. After graduating high school, he joined his father on their Hartford farm, where they worked side by side, building a legacy that would last a lifetime.

Dwane's sense of duty and patriotism led him to serve in the US Army from 1950 to 1952. Upon his return, he resumed farming and met the love of his life, Audrey Twedt, at a dance at the American Legion Hall in Hartford. Their whirlwind romance culminated in marriage on August 9, 1953, followed by a dreamy honeymoon at Niagara Falls. Together, Dwane and Audrey built a life filled with love, laughter, and traveling.

Dwane's varied career took him from farming to driving for ASAP and Pam Oil Company, and even working alongside his son, Lawayne, at his motorcycle business in Texas. In his free time, Dwane reveled in the great outdoors, hunting, fishing, and taking trips throughout the United States and Europe with family. His community spirit led him to become a dedicated member of the Hartford American Legion, Trinity Lutheran Church, and the 40&8 Club. As we celebrate Dwane's extraordinary life, we remember his kind heart, his generosity, and his unwavering commitment to family, church, and community. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories we cherish.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Jodie Kruciak of Krum, TX; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey on December 25, 2020; sons, Lawayne Matthies, and Randall Matthies; son-in-law, David Kruciak;  his parents, William "WC" and Meta Matthies; and sisters, Wanda Barnhart and Carole Dieters.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00pm Monday, March 17, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hartford, SD. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 Sunday afternoon at the church.
