Edward Alvin Chapin, age 88, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly from Vienna, SD, died December 19 at Sanford Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, December 27, 2024 at Miller Funeral Home – Westside Chapel (6200 W 41st St. Sioux Falls, SD). A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at Peace Lutheran Church (5509 W 41st St., Sioux Falls, SD) with visitation one hour prior and lunch to follow. Interment will be held at 3:00 pm at Vienna Lutheran Cemetery in Vienna, SD with a time of fellowship and refreshments to follow at Bethlehem Lutheran Church (407 Clark St., Vienna, SD).

Edward Alvin Chapin was born November 17, 1936, to Marvin and Emma (Enger) Chapin in Britton, SD. He grew up on a farm and graduated third in his class in 1956 from Amherst High School. He was also known for his athletic skills in basketball and football. He served our nation in the National Guards from 1960-1966. He attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, where he received his degree in industrial drawing. While there, he met the love of his life.

He married Delores Jean Carstensen on June 3rd, 1962, in Bryant, SD. Four children, Mark Edward, Melanie Jean, Marla Jo, and Myra Jane, were born into this union.

Throughout his life in the Vienna community, he served four years as Clark County Commissioner, he was active in Farmers Union, he was President of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and was a member of the Cenex board, the Vienna Cemetery board, Lutheran Men in Mission, and the Willow Lake school board. He also enjoyed bowling and was a part of a bowling league in his younger years. He farmed for 50 years, retired at age 70, moved to Sioux Falls, and, with his wife, enjoyed traveling down south with their 5th wheel and many wonderful vacations. For the last ten years, he went six days a week to Active Generation, playing cards and visiting.

Ed lived a wonderful life, happy to have shared it included his spouse Delores, Sioux Falls; one son, Mark (Cyndy) Chapin, Palmdale, CA; three daughters, Melanie (Richard) Schroeder, Watertown, Marla (David Fernandez) Howard, Trinity, FL, and Myra (Bill) Koerner, Sioux Falls; ten grandchildren, Amanda (Brendon) Clarke, Toronto, CAN, Brandon Howard, Tampa FL, Joshua Chapin, Palmdale, CA, Jazmyn (Luis) Colon, Trinity, FL, Hannah Chapin, Palmdale, CA, Austin Kusler, Philadelphia, PA, Adam Kusler, Brookings, Aaron (Sydney) Kusler, Brookings, Dillon Schroeder, Watertown, and Beau Koerner Sioux Falls; two great-grandchildren, Avyanna Colon and Luis Colon, Trinity FL; sister, Carol (Leroy) Lautt, Sioux Falls; and sister-in-law, Betty Chapin, Madison.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Duane.
