Edward Charles Hanisch, 86, died on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Miller Funeral Home – Westside Chapel (6200 W. 41st St., Sioux Falls, SD.) Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, December 13, 2024, at Pleasant View Cemetery in Valley Springs, SD.
Edward was born on September 17, 1938, to Lawrence and Mildred (Pippett) Hanisch. He was raised and educated in Sioux Falls, SD, and graduated from Washington High School in 1956. When he was younger, Ed rode in horse shows with his cousins. He and his best friend, Robert Kilburn, enjoyed roller-skating at the West Sioux Roller Rink. It was there that he met the love of his life, Lila Rae Gunderson. The couple were married on January 27, 1957. They lived in Sioux Falls, Renner, and eventually on a farm in rural Lincoln County. They had four children: Randall "Randy", Rhonda, Roger, and Roxanne "Roxy."
Ed worked for Greenlee Meat-Packing Company, followed by Meilman Foods, and John Morrell. He retired in 2003. Ed and Lila enjoyed roller-skating, square-dancing, bowling, playing cards, and Farkle. He also coached a girls' softball team in Tea, SD, in the 1970's. Ed and Lila moved to Lennox in 1984 and to Sioux Falls in 2012. Following Lila's death in 2015, Ed returned to Lennox.
Grateful for sharing Ed's life are his children, Rhonda Hanisch of Brookings, SD, Roger (Gayle) Hanisch of Lennox, SD, and Roxanne (Todd) Prochniak of Lennox, SD; daughter-in-law, Eldonna Hanisch of Lennox, SD; grandchildren, David (Denise) Hanisch, Angela Hanisch, Dustin (Jen) Hanisch, Andrew Hanisch, Alex Hanisch, and Lee (Megan) Frier; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jayden, Aiden, Addison, Ashlyn Jo, Joslynn, Hayes, Brooke, and Jettley.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Mildred Hanisch; wife, Lila Hanisch; son Randy Hanisch; granddaughter, Jennifer Hanisch; and sisters, Marge Christensen and JoAnn Letcher.
