Our loving father, grandfather, and dear friend Edward "Ed" Harold Harp passed away peacefully with family on September 11, 2024, in Acworth, GA.

Born on November 1, 1927, to August and Ann (Hanson) Harp in Appleton, WI, Ed and his mother moved to Mobridge, SD, around 1929.  His mother remarried (Phil Neumiller), and Ed used the Neumiller surname until adulthood.

After graduating from Mobridge High School, Ed joined the Navy in 1945 with his best friend and cousin, Ray Hanson. Together, they served in the Pacific on LSM 346. They worked hard at their duties but also visited foreign lands – growing up experiencing the life of a young sailor both on ship and shore. He often said that his Navy years were some of the best of his life.

Ed returned home after the Navy, stoking fires (a fireman) on the railroad. It was then he met and married Sally Wacker. Together, they moved to Vermillion, SD, where he graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Advertising Art. After graduation, Ed and Sally moved to Sioux Falls. He received his Master's Degree in Education (1958) and taught art for 35 years, mostly at Whittier Junior High School.

They were married for 68 wonderful years, making a home, enjoying friends, family, and neighbors - generally making Sioux Falls all that much nicer for everyone they met. Ed and Sally enjoyed dancing and spent many Friday nights dancing at the VFW. Ed was also an avid gardener with a special love for growing tomatoes. Ed always enjoyed the outdoors and spent much time fishing, camping, hunting, and golfing with family and friends in his younger adult years. In addition to his hobbies and family vacations, he kept busy during the summers by painting houses and doing roofing jobs.  Also, he was a fantastic card player and made a great tomato soup.

Retirement in 1988 gave them time to travel, especially trips to visit family.  They particularly enjoyed their tour of U.S. National Parks and a month-long trip to Australia and New Zealand, both trips taken with members of their First Lutheran Church family.

Most importantly, to us, Ed was "Dad." Family was always the top priority for Ed.  He was a diligent provider and a great role model with traditional Midwestern values (you betchya!). He showed us what is truly valuable in life and provided us with the stable base that allowed us to expand out and explore our lives.

Grateful to have shared his life are his daughters, Renee (Mark) Schlosberg, Julie (Gary) Gilman, and Brian Harp (estranged); grandchildren April (Jimmy) Smith, Aaron (Alissa) Guse, and Alissa Schlosberg (Ahmed Abdalla); as well as great-grandchildren Caleb, Bryce, and Aiden Smith; Ava, Aria, and Anderson Guse; and Isaac Schlosberg-Abdalla, as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews and their children.  In March, he moved from his long-term retirement home at Prairie Creek in Sioux Falls to Celebration Village in Acworth, GA.  There, he enjoyed playing BINGO, listening to the entertainment, meeting with fellow veterans, lunching out on Fridays, as well as spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Ann Hanson (Harp) Neumiller and August Harp; his wife, Sally; and his sister Phyllis, whom he loved dearly.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Miller Southside Chapel, with visitation at 10 a.m. A private burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery.
