Faye E. Sommer, formerly of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Sanford Health Vermillion Care Center in Vermillion, South Dakota. Faye was 96 years old.
Faye Elizabeth Bies was born on March 15, 1930, in Sioux City, Iowa, to parents Fred and Dorothy (Rhodes) Bies. She was raised in Battle Creek, Iowa, until age 14; then her family moved to Miller, South Dakota, where she graduated from Miller High School in 1948.
On September 10, 1947, Faye was united in marriage to Raphael “Ray” L. Sommers in Miller, South Dakota. The couple resided in Miller, SD, until 1984. They were blessed with three sons and two daughters. In 1984, the couple moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where they lived for 20 years before returning to Sioux Falls. Ray passed in 2015.
Faye worked at the family-owned bar, Sommers Bar, in Miller, South Dakota. She also worked at the Miller Greenhouse for about 4 years. In her spare time, Faye enjoyed reading, puzzles, gardening, and spending time with her cats, Murphy and Oreo. She also cherished time with her family.
Faye was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Parish in Sioux Falls.
Grateful for having shared her life with her sons, Bob (Julie) Sommer of Burnsville, MN, Mike (Vickie) Sommer of Burnsville, MN, and Terry (Carol) Sommer of Sioux Falls; and her daughters, Rae Ann (Kevin) Buntrock of Rapid City, SD, and Karen (John) Erotas of Scottsdale, AZ. Faye is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Faye was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Dorothy Bies; her husband, Ray; brother, Tom Bies; and her sister, Dorothy Broom.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 16, 2026, at Miller Southside Chapel, located at 7400 S. Minnesota Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57108. Family will be present to greet friends beginning at 1:00 PM. Faye’s cremated remains will be laid to rest with her late husband, Ray Sommer, at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota.
