Hilma Downing, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls. She was 88.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00pm Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at St. John American Lutheran Church, 1912 W. 13th Street in Sioux Falls. The service will be live-streamed at https://vimeo.com/event/5263769

Interment will be held 11:00am Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Mamre Cemetery, Stanton, Iowa.

Hilma Marie Downing was born August 19, 1936, in Montgomery, IA to Lyle and Helen Sederburg.  She attended Huron University taking night classes for teaching.  She worked as a church secretary for many years in Huron, SD.

On September 12, 1955, Hilma was united in marriage with Richard Walter Downing in Essex, IA.  They resided in Huron, SD, after marriage and moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1979.  They became loving parents to their three children.  Hilma went back to school and graduated from Presentation Nursing school in 1988 with her degree in Nursing.  She worked at Avera McKennan Hospital on the Oncology unit until her retirement in 2005.

Hilma loved to sew, cook, craft, garden, and read.  Dick and Hilma vacationed most summers in Custer, SD, at Outlaw Ranch Bible camp with their children and later grandchildren.  Dick and Hilma were always active members in their local church, serving and sharing the gospel.  Hilma played the piano for Sunday school, and she was an active member in the church choir.  She was also active in the Women of the ELCA.   Dick and Hilma volunteered each year during the church's Harvest Festival, raising thousands of dollars to help fight hunger in Sioux Falls.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters, Linda Baird (Kirk), Red Oak, IA, and Brenda Stokke (Todd), Lake Preston, SD; 5 grandchildren; Jackie Viet (John) Meridian, ID, Heather Bonetti (Jarred) Amery, WI, Jordan Baird (Alicia) Urbandale, IA, Robin Aslesen (Ben) Ankeny, IA and Chris Stokke (Mickelle) Worthing, SD; 11 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, parents, siblings, and son Steven Downing.
