Hoang Mai

Hoang Thi Mai, 78, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at home hospice in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 3:00 pm, Friday, September 4, 2026, at Miller Funeral Home - Downtown Chapel (507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls), with cremation to follow. Memorials may be made to the family. 

Hoang was born in Vinh Long, Vietnam, on March 15, 1948, to Ba Van Nguyen and Thoi Thi Mai.

Hoang was a devoted and caring Mother and Grandmother. Before moving to the U.S, Hoang was a cook selling Hu Tieu and Iced Tea on the street foods market.

Hoang moved to the United States in 1989 from Vietnam along with her two sons, Son and Minh.

Hoang worked as a seamstress in Spokane, WA from 1989 until she moved to Worthington, MN in 1995. She then worked at Swift & Company from 1995 to 2009, when her health forced her to retire early at age 61.

Hoang moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 2018 to be closer to her grandchildren. In 2024, her health declined, and she needed 24-hour care. Her son, Minh, and daughter-in-law took care of her at her home because they didn't want her in a nursing home.

Hoang enjoyed gardening, watching Chinese series and movies, spending time with her grandchildren, and cooking in her free time.

Hoang is lovingly remembered by her two sons: Son Mai of Brooklyn, NY; Minh Tran ( Thanh Huynh) of Sioux Falls, SD; her grandchildren: Anthony, Theo, Levi and Avyannah Tran of Sioux Falls, SD; numerous nieces/nephews and her extended family and friends here and in Vietnam.

Hoang is preceded in death by her father: Ba Van Nguyen; mother: Thoi Thi Mai; older sister: Hai Thi Mai; older brothers: Ba Van Mai, Tu Van Mai, and Giao Van Mai; younger sisters: Tam Thi Mai and Hoa Hong Thi Mai; younger brothers: Bay Van Mai, Ut Van Mai, and Dung Tieng Mai.

Out of her 10 siblings, Hoang was the last to be called in her family. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
