Obituary

James Frederick Breit, 81, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in Sun Lakes, AZ. James was born in Omaha, NE, on August 13, 1945.

James grew up with a deep passion for athletics, playing basketball, football, and track at Washington High School in Sioux Falls, ultimately being inducted into the Washington High School Hall of Fame. He continued his athletic career at Augustana College, where he was a standout two-sport athlete in basketball and football. After he graduated from Augie, he spent time at Kansas State University receiving a Master of Science degree. James then attended dental school at the Washington University School of Dental Medicine in St. Louis, MO, earning his degree in 1974. Within days of obtaining his degree, James moved to Fort Ord, CA, where he proudly served as a captain and commissioned dentist in the United States Army. Here, James's athletic prowess shone through again as stated by his chief of staff: "Captain Breit was one of the most outstanding players on the MEDDAC basketball team who always maintained himself in an exemplary state of physical fitness."

Upon completion of his military service, James was honorably discharged and moved back to Sioux Falls. In Sioux Falls, he established a successful private dental practice and built a wonderful life alongside his beloved wife and three children. Later in life, James remained active, excelling in tennis and golf, where he achieved two holes-in-one. James was the ultimate perfectionist who loved spending time doing carpentry, landscaping and painting. James will be sadly missed by his family, friends and patients.

James is survived by his three children: Tony (Melissa Nicholson) Breit, Lance (Melissa Gibson) Breit and Virginia Breit. He is also survived by his brother, Don (MaryLana) Breit; his sister, Deborah (Tom) Compton; and many beloved grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife.
