The family moved to Mason City, Iowa for two years where her father was trained to be a roadmaster. The family moved to Redfield, South Dakota, where Janis graduated High School in 1951. Her senior year, Janis won a South Dakota vocal singing contest for a summer program at Julliard Music College in New York. She returned home to attend college. Both devoted their lives to children and later set up a special Scholarship Program through the Sioux Falls Community Foundation.
Janis and Raymond participated in community organizations, such as local Shriners, and many others. For fun, they both liked to play golf, enjoyed their houseboat, and traveled with Airstream friends.
