Janice Waneta Peterson, 89 of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away Friday, December 19, 2025, at Ava's Hospice House.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Peace Lutheran Church with burial at the South Dakota State Veteran's Cemetery. The service will be livestreamed by clicking on this link; http:/peacelutheran.com/live

Janice, oldest daughter of Walter and Gladys (Nelson) Skyberg was born April 22, 1936 in Wentworth, SD. After that siblings Marilyn, Jerry, and Judy were born.

Janice grew up on the family farm near Rutland, SD, where she was a great help. After her chores were done she could be found with her childhood friend Jackie up at Johnny's. Janice attended Rutland, High School, graduating in 1954. Following graduation, she was a nanny for a year then attended and graduated from Stewart's School of Hairstyling in Sioux Falls, SD in 1956.

Janice met the love of her life Norman at the Lake Campbell Roller Rink, they were married June 30, 1957 in Bethel Lutheran Church in Rutland, SD. To this union three children were born, Jody Lynn, Todd Alan, and Steven Kenneth. Janice loved her job with food service, "because of the children." She also enjoyed working at The Ceramic Shop, creating many painted ceramics that she shared with family.

Janice often shared stories of going to concerts with her friend Jeanette, late night card parties and fondue and also going to the trailer house at Lake Madison. Janice should be remembered by being the heart of the family, her love of Scandinavian Heritage, her vegetable and flower gardens. Janice was close to all her siblings but her brother Jerry had an extra special place in her heart and talked on the phone everyday!

Janice sold the family home in 2021 and moved into an apartment at Sunny Crest. She enjoyed living there as she made many dear friends and loved the activities. Janice was an original member of Peace Lutheran Church and hardly ever missed a worship service.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children Jody (Terry) Kintigh of Baudette, MN, Todd (Nancy) Peterson of Sioux Falls, SD, and Steve (Lynn) Peterson of Chamberlain, SD; sisters Marilyn Stormo of Creswell, OR, Judy Limmer of Brandon, SD, Jerry Skyberg of Madison, SD; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Ava's Hospice House or Peace Lutheran Church, both of Sioux Falls.
