Jewell Beverly Richards, age 96, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at Good Samaritan Society – Luther Manor in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Private services will be held at a later date at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Huron, South Dakota.

Jewell was born to Charles and Alice (Werdal) Saloom on Easter Sunday, March 31, 1929 in Sisseton, South Dakota. Her parents moved to Aberdeen in 1943, where she graduated high school and attended college at Northern State University. It was in college where she met her eventual husband, Hobart "Hobe" Richards, who was returning from the Navy Air Corps where he served as a pilot. They were married in 1950. The couple then moved to Webster, South Dakota, where Hobe was a head golf professional, and then to Huron in 1958, where he remained a head professional until his retirement in 1981.

As an only child, Jewell treasured her friends and never lost track of them through a "Round Robin" letter of more than 50 years. This began while the 13 friends were in high school; now there are just 5 lifelong friends left in their 90s.

Jewell was an active church volunteer. As a former member of St. Martin's Catholic Church in Huron, she taught catechism and served as an altar society leader over many years. She also served as a Girl Scout troop leader for over five years.

Jewell worked part-time at Bales Continental Commission in their bookkeeping and accounting department. Besides playing golf, Jewell was an active bridge player, an avid reader, and a passionate cook and baker.

Jewell is survived by her three daughters, Vicki (Michael) Ridgway, Valere (David) Patterson, and Jody Richards; and her son, Hobe Richards. Jewell was always grateful to have lived long enough to know and appreciate her six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hobert "Hobe" Richards Jr. who passed in 2002; and her parents, Charles and Alice Saloom.
