John M. Boos age 65 of Sioux Falls, passed away at home surrounded by family on Thursday August 6, 2015.
The family will greet friends from 6:00-7:00 pm Thursday August 20, with a memorial service at 7:00 pm, at the El Riad Shrine, 510 S. Phillips Ave. The service will close with Masonic, military and Fraternal Order of Police rites.
John Michael Boos, son of Bernard and Madeline (Bolger) Boos, was born September 14, 1949 in Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up and received his education in Sioux Falls. John entered the Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War as a radio operator. In addition to other merit citations, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Valor for heroic action and meritorious service under direct hostile enemy fire.
John then returned to Sioux Falls where he began a 29 year career with the Sioux Falls Police Department. He retired as a Lieutenant in 2000. After retiring, John worked as the El Riad Shrine building supervisor for one year and Event coordinator until his full retirement. He also worked in security for AKAL Security, in the Federal Court House in Sioux Falls, and was later the supervisor for AKAL Security for all the court houses in the state. He retired due to ill health in 2014. John married the love of his life Diana "Dee" Woltjer in 1994 in Sioux Falls. The couple made their home there. He was a member of the V.F.W., the Marine Corps League, Masonic Trinity Lodge, the El Raid Shrine and the El Riad Oriental Band.
Grateful for having shared is life are his wife, Diana "Dee" Boos, Sioux Falls; his children, Michelle (Rodger) Reit, Sioux Falls, Traci (Aaron) Helgerson, Tampa, FL, Adam (Dillion) Woltjer, Omaha, NE, John Boos Jr., Canova, SD, Gavin (Rena) Woltjer, Bartlesville, OK, Ross (Camille) Woltjer, Virginia Beach, VA, Brooke (Randy) Ust, St. Paul, MN and Theresa (John) Jurrens, Sioux Falls; 15 grandchildren, a future grandchild due September; his siblings, Bernard Boos, Big Stone, SD, Barbara (Gayle) Thomassen, Brookings, SD, George (Gloria) Boos, Milbank, SD, Kathleen (Steve) Satterlee, Spearfish, SD, Paul Boos, NY, and Jean (Doug) Schueller, Pierre, SD; and a host of nieces, nephews and close friends. His parents, Bernard and Madeline Boos, preceded him in death.
