John Marr, 85 of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Good Samaritan Lutheran Manor.

A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the Miller Funeral Home Downtown Chapel with private interment at the St. Adrian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be directed to Pheasants Forever or Ducks Unlimited.

John Lowell Marr, son of Lowell and Dr. Viola (Wagner) Marr, was born on September 6, 1940, in Sioux City, IA. He grew up in Sioux Falls, SD, where he graduated from Washington High School and served as an Altar Boy at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. John moved to California where he attended at the University of Southern California. John enlisted with the United States Air Guard and served before being honorably discharged in 1966.

John began a career with the United States Postal Service which lasted for over 30 years until he retired in 1995. He eventually returned to Sioux Falls, SD.    As most people know, John had one of the biggest and best smiles, and he was always open to a friendly conversation.  This was true even in his work and every Christmas he was showered with gifts of appreciation for his kindness and dedication.

During his years in Southern California he was a devoted USC sports fan, attending most home football and basketball games with his family and often went on the road to support the teams as well.   He was also an avid tennis player and shared many hours on the courts sharing his passion for the game with his daughters.  When John eventually returned to South Dakota he worked at Catfish Bay (as a boat driver for water ski competitions),  and at Elmwood and Prairie Green Golf Courses where he found a lot of joy in playing golf.   He also found his new passion for dog training and field trials which was something that he shared with his girlfriend Sally .  He very much loved his dogs and while the clubs, competitions, training and human friendships were a bonus it was truly the love and companionship of the dogs that was his greatest joy.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughters Milae Fish Ringener and her husband Philip of Big Spring, TX, Jahna Smith and her husband Jay, of Stanwood, WA; three grandchildren, Noah, Mariah, and Samantha; three great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents and a special friend Sally Bruns.
