Joseph "Joe" Miller, 70, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away on Monday, September 15, 2025 at Prince of Peace Dougherty Hospice.
Memorial service will be 1:00 pm Saturday, October 11 at Miller Funeral Home Southside Chapel, 7400 S. Minnesota Ave., Sioux Falls, SD. The family will be present to greet friends from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at the funeral home.
Joseph "Joe" Warren Miller, son of George Miller and Helen (Wilson) Miller, was born Oct. 6, 1954 in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was the youngest of six children.
Joe attended the Cathedral school system in Sioux Falls and graduated from O'Gorman High School in 1972. He then attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, earning a degree in nursing in 1974, and then graduating from the McKennan Hospital anesthesia program through the USD Medical School in 1977.
He began work as an anesthetist in Spencer, Iowa, eventually moving to Emmetsburg, Iowa in 1981 and Algona, Iowa in 1988, starting his own independent contracted anesthesia practice and fulfilling his career dream. Joe had a longtime career in anesthesia, working for over 40 years in the profession throughout northern Iowa.
Joe was united in marriage to Katheryn "Kathy" Keisacker on March 27, 1982 in Sioux Falls, and they welcomed their son Kyle on March 10, 1989. He was devoted to his family and was an amazing husband and father. Over the last few years, Joe vastly researched and was fascinated with his family ancestry.
He treasured his time with close friends in Sioux Falls, Emmetsburg, and Algona, especially his Woolly group. Joe loved to garden, particularly growing onions, potatoes, and pumpkins (his favorite!). He was an avid fan of Halloween, and always expected an entire month to celebrate his birthday, not just one day! Joe was an awesome chili maker, following his Aunt Lois's recipe, continuing their family's New Year's Day tradition. He was an amazing griller and loved to have his Oktoberfests with brats and beer every fall, celebrating his German heritage. He always had to cook lutefisk every Christmas Eve, honoring his Norwegian heritage. Joe loved his annual Smoky Mountains, Branson, and Las Vegas vacations with the family, particularly defeating his son every year in miniature golf!
Grateful for having shared his life is his wife, Kathy, Sioux Falls, S.D.; son, Kyle, Maryville, Mo.; sisters Jude (Rex) Henderson, Woodbury, Minn., and Joan Arnott, Canton, S.D.; brother James (Sharon) Miller, Omaha, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents George and Helen Miller; two brothers, John and Jeffrey Miller; numerous aunts, uncles, and friends; great-nephews, Andrew Lingenfelter and Ian Keisacker; mother-in-law, Bettie Keisacker; and brother-in-law, David Keisacker.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorials in the form of donations to Avera Dougherty Hospice House, 4509 S. Prince of Peace Pl., Sioux Falls, SD 57103.
