Kathleen Ida Muir Moulton was born on December 26, 1950, in Edinburg, Texas, to Lyle Muir and Willa Belle Bennett Muir. She was her family’s “Yellow Rose of Texas.” The family moved from South Texas to Southwest Minnesota to become a farming family. She was joined by sisters Sheryl (1955) and Denise (1957). Kathleen attended schools in Windom, Minnesota, where she especially enjoyed art and saxophone, and graduated in 1968.
Kathleen was married in 1974 and moved to Alaska, where she welcomed her two beloved daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah. She lived in Alaska for several years, working as a nurse at Alaska Psychiatric Institute on the adolescent unit and serving at the Pioneer Home for elderly Alaskans who lived there before it became a state! She returned to Minnesota and South Dakota, where she worked in nursing for over 30 years. At the V.A. Hospital in Sturgis, SD, she wrote and received a federal grant to establish a rural veterans’ clinic and received the “SD Nurse of the Year” award for her achievements. Her administrative gifts were utilized in various ways as she served primarily as a nurse administrator throughout her nursing career.
Kathleen loved school and was an excellent student. She attended a variety of higher education contexts: Bethel College (1 year), Metropolitan Community College (2-year nursing degree), Augustana College (4-year BS in Nursing), University of South Dakota (M.A. in Public Administration), and Sioux Falls Seminary (Master of Divinity).
The highlight of her professional life was the years spent serving in Hospice Chaplaincy. She worked at Sanford Hospice in Sioux Falls and also at Hospice of the Red River Valley in Fargo, ND. She loved her work in hospice and strongly believed in its mission.
In God’s goodness, Kathleen went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at Ava’s House Hospice on Wednesday, October 1, 2026.
Kathleen is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Vogel and Sarah (Jeremy) Yoder; her eight cherished grandchildren, Jake Vogel, Joshua Vogel, Jonny Vogel, James Vogel, Jeremiah Vogel, Raquel (Reece) Tyrrell, David Yoder, and Luke Yoder. She is also survived by her sister, Denise (Allen) Kjesbo, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials can be given to Kairos University/Sioux Falls Seminary. HERE
