With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Larry L. Brasel, a cherished member of the De Smet, South Dakota community, who departed this life at his home on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at the age of 66.

Born on September 20, 1958, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Larry was the beloved son of Elmer and Goldyne (Zander) Brasel. He was one of five children in a close-knit family and received his education in the Sioux Falls Public Schools.

Larry's journey took him to Sioux City, Nebraska, in the early 1980s, where he worked diligently at the Iowa Beef Packing Plant. In 1987, he bravely moved to Arizona briefly, working as a painter at an apartment complex. However, his heart led him back to Sioux Falls in 1989, where he found a home with his brother-in-law at Clete's Empire Painting. In 1990, he started a fulfilling career with John Morrell, Inc., dedicatedly serving as a machinery operator in the freezer department until his well-deserved retirement in 2016 after 25 years of hard work.

Larry held a special place in his heart for his home on Lake Thompson in Kingsbury County, South Dakota. This serene location was where he made countless memories with his lake family, relishing moments spent fishing and hunting, especially during trips with his cherished son, Shawn. His passion for his Harley Davidson motorcycle brought him immense joy, and he loved nothing more than riding alongside his best friend, Tim Bowling. Larry also had a deep affection for his dog, Harley, and found great pleasure in collecting treasures from garage and rummage sales.

Those fortunate enough to know Larry often described him as a "jack of all trades." He was a true handyman who enjoyed spending time in his garage, always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and family in need. His generosity and kindness left a lasting impact on those around him.

Larry leaves behind a loving family, including his son, Shawn (Joy) Brasel of Hartford, SD; his daughter, Sarah Brasel of Sioux Falls, SD; and five wonderful grandchildren: Trevor, Lola, Isaac, Ivy, and Evan. He also leaves his loving sister, Cheryl (Clete) Friessen of Sioux Falls; special nieces and nephews, Katie Schildhauer, Michelle Rasmussen, and Randy Friessen; his best friends, Tim Bowling and Tom Bowling; and his adored dog, Harley.

Larry has been reunited in peace with his parents, Elmer and Goldyne Brasel; his dear sisters, Dawn Schildhauer and Karen Thomas; his brother, Terry Brasel; and his nephew, Terry Friessen.

A funeral service to celebrate Larry's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at Miller Funeral Home—downtown, 504 S. Main Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation will begin one hour before the service. A reception will provide an opportunity for fellowship and remembrance after the service. Our thoughts and prayers are with Larry's family and friends during this difficult time.
