Lorraine J. Matzen, a resident of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2026, at Dougherty Hospice, surrounded by loved ones, at the age of 96.

Born on August 5, 1930, in Fairview, South Dakota, Lorraine Joyce Ingebrigtson was the daughter of Korell and Gertrude (Swanson) Ingebrigtson. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hudson, SD, and was confirmed on Palm Sunday, 1944, at Bethany Lutheran in Fairview, SD. Lorraine completed her education in Canton and graduated from Canton High School in 1948.

On December 3, 1948, Lorraine married Robert H. Matzen in Fairview. After marriage, the couple was stationed in Panama as Robert continued his career in the Navy. They were then sent to Patuxent River, Maryland, where their first son, David, was born. After three years in Patuxent River, they moved to Sioux Falls, SD. They raised a family that included six sons—David, Curtis, Mark, Dennis, Bruce, and Steven—and one daughter, Kathryn.

As a devoted stay-at-home mother, Lorraine actively participated in her children's lives, notably serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother for Pack 46. She and Robert were charter members of both Grace Lutheran Church and Peace Lutheran Church, where they dedicated over 60 years of service. In their retirement, she and Bob bought a home in Mesa, AZ. After Bob passed, she spent the winter in Arizona for the next 20 years. Lorraine made significant contributions to the church community by crafting quilts and COVID masks. In addition to her church activities, she enjoyed sewing, playing card games, dancing at the Arkota Ballroom, golfing, and bowling. A remarkable personal achievement was her record of never receiving a speeding ticket.

Lorraine is survived by her children—Curtis (Nancy), Mark (Mary Jo), Kathryn (Steven Ketcham), Dennis, Bruce, and Steven Matzen—all of whom reside in Sioux Falls. She also leaves behind eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Korell and Gertrude Ingebrigtson; her husband, Robert Matzen; her son, David R. Matzen; and her brother, Eugene Ingebrigtson.

A visitation with family present will be held on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Miller Westside Chapel, located at 6200 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57106. A funeral service will take place at 10:30 AM, followed by a luncheon, on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Peace Lutheran Church, located at 5509 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57106. Lorraine will be laid to rest at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery in Fairview, SD.
