Obituary

Lorraine D. Speiser of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, peacefully passed on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls. Lorraine was 94 years old.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., with family present one hour prior, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1501 West 26th Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57105. Lorraine will be interred next to her late husband, Clayton "Spike" Speiser, at the South Dakota State Veterans Cemetery, 25965 477th Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57104.

Lorraine was born on September 16, 1930, to Henry and Marie (Chevalier) Hoffarth in St. Cloud, Minnesota. She attended public school and graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1948. While there, she made lifelong friends and was a proud cheerleader. Lorraine corresponded with her friends and sister, Marlene, via letters for many years, often starting her letters with "Dear Ones."

After graduation, Lorraine married her high school sweetheart, Clayton Speiser, at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on July 5, 1951. The couple was blessed with three children: Dave, Mike, and John. They lived in St. Cloud, MN, and Minot, SD, before settling in Sioux Falls in 1971. After 72 years of marriage, Clayton sadly passed away on June 1, 2023.

Lorraine was a devoted wife and loving mother who dedicated herself to managing the household, gardening, cooking, and raising her three boys. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, SD, and she particularly cherished the time she spent with her family. She loved being with her husband Clayton, traveling across the country, fishing, and watching Minnesota Wild hockey and Vikings football games.

Lorraine was best known for her kindness, charm, and beauty, inside and out. She lit up every room with her fun-loving spirit and hearty, loud laughter. She was eager to express her love for others with hugs, gifts, and baked goods, including her famous brownies, lemon bars, French bread rolls, and cookies. Lorraine's family was especially fond of seeing her during the holidays, often excitedly telling jokes and sharing stories while together in the living room of her home.

She is survived by her beloved sons, Dave (Angie) Speiser of Minot, ND, Mike Speiser of Sioux Falls, SD, and John (Teresa) Speiser of Brandon, SD; her cherished grandchildren, Peter (Anna) Speiser of Emerson, NE, Brenna (Byron Dueck) Speiser of London, UK, Joe (Brandi) Speiser of Lubbock, TX, Dan (Mallorie) Speiser of Henderson, NV, Rachel Speiser of Sioux Falls, and Jessica and Sam Speiser of Brookings and Brandon, SD; great-grandchildren Brody, Austin, Colton, Inga, and Lars. She also leaves behind her sister, Marlene (Jim) Larson of Anoka, MN, and sisters-in-law, Jan Hoffarth and Ida Hoffarth.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Marie Hoffarth; sisters, Beatrice Graves and Henrietta Stickney; brothers, Odell Hoffarth, Raymond Hoffarth, Romaine Hoffarth, and Arthur Hoffarth; sister-in-law, Christine Hoffarth; and her beloved husband, Clayton Speiser.
