Lowell Jerome Zaske, 90, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on Sunday, March 8, 2026.

Visitation will begin at 3:00 pm, with a prayer service following at 5:00 pm on Monday, March 16, 2026 at Miller Funeral Home (Westside Location) 6200 W. 41st St., Sioux Falls, SD.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm the following day, Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Zion Lutheran Church, 509 S 11th St, Olivia, MN.

Lowell Jerome Zaske was born on January 26, 1936 and passed peacefully on the sunny Sunday morning of March 8, 2026 after having just celebrated his 90th birthday a little over six weeks prior.  That morning as his daughters drove to the Good Samaritan facility where he resided, they commented about how he would have loved to watch the geese migrate as a huge flock loudly flew overhead just as the call came in that he had passed.  So, it is a comfort to know his soul was carried to the heavens on the wings of the geese that he loved to watch so very much.  He is at peace now and watching them from above.

Lowell was born on their farm south of Renville, MN to Theodore and Lottie (Docken) Zaske. In 1956 he enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX for training and then at White Sands, NM  when he then came home to serve in the Redwood Falls and Olivia Reserve and National Guard units while he served his country faithfully until he was honorably discharged in 1960 as a Sergeant/E5.  In 1958 he married Twyla (Muetzel) and together they had five children, although one died as an infant. Together they farmed and shared the ups and downs of everyday life, but never stopped loving and laughing and being the beautiful example of what a real marriage should be.  He had strong loving arms and hands that were strong to protect yet gentle when a hug or caress was needed.   Lowell was an active member of his community in Renville as a Cenex Co-Op Board member for 24 years; served many years in different positions at St. Matthew's Church; served the MN Soybean Growers Association as a member and County Chairman and also on the State Board. He also was a member of the American Legion Post in Willmar, MN.

When Lowell wasn't farming he could be found camping, fishing, waterskiing, or traveling with his family seeking out a new adventure or heading to visit his brother Stan.  Family time was treasured time for him and he was never short on shenanigans too.  He was always full of fun and a little mischief.

After 41 years of farming, Lowell retired from farming in 1997 and he and Twyla moved to Hartford, SD in 2005 where he was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, and spent time fishing with friends and family when he could.  He prided himself on the beautiful lawn he had.  Even the lawn care companies would stop and ask him "Who does your lawn?" and he would proudly say "Me!"  As they say, once a farmer, always a farmer.

After the love of his life passed in 2022, Lowell moved into memory care at Good Samaritan, Prairie Creek in Sioux Falls, where the staff took amazing care of him until his passing.  The staff of Sanford Hospice were incredibly caring of Dad and comforting his family during these last weeks. His family is eternally indebted to them for making his passing peaceful and comfortable.

Lowell was preceded in death by his wife Twyla (Muetzel) Zaske, parents Theodore & Lottie (Docken) Zaske, brothers Stanley and Robert Zaske, and infant son Gregory Zaske.

He is survived by his children Jenelle (Glenn) Mehlhaff, Wayland (Cindy) Zaske, Susanne Peters (Rachel Graetz), and Annette (Tom) Cook. Grandchildren are Gregory (Jennifer) Olsen, Rebecca Peters (Bryson Griggs), Elizabeth Stevens, Kathryn (Tyler) Wynthein, Krystal (Leo) Zaske Södergren, Eric Mehlhaff, and Christian Sladek.  Great Grandchildren are Davyn Griggs, Logan Griggs, Sophia Santos, Nolyn Wynthein, Lincoln Olsen, William Zaske Södergren, Brynn Wynthein, and Madison Olsen, and Alexander Zaske Södergren.
