Mark A. Smith, a lifelong resident of Sioux Falls, passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Avera McKennan Hospital. Mark was 68 years old.

He was born on November 2, 1957, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Harold Leon and Mary Louise (Nelson) Smith. Mark was born with disabilities and attended the historic Emerson School, built in 1923. This prominent elementary and special education center was part of the Sioux Falls School District until it closed in 1998, after which the building was torn down. Today, the 3.6-acre site is home to Emerson Park, a community-focused space where Mark enjoyed spending time.

In his spare time, Mark loved riding his bicycle around town and visiting various parks in Sioux Falls. He particularly enjoyed Falls Park and Emerson Park. Mark was also passionate about music and was a big animal lover. He had a big heart and loved everyone he met, always striving to please others and cherishing his time with family.

Mark is survived by his siblings: Doug (Barb) Smith, Susan Smith, Frank Smith, and Ronald Smith, all from Sioux Falls, and Loren Smith from Canistota, SD. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Steve Miller, also of Sioux Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Mary Smith; two brothers, Tommy and David Smith; and a sister, Patty Miller.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 13, 2026, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
