Obituary

Marlene Schievelbein of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at Sanford Medical Center. Marlene was 92 years young.

Marlene Joy Christensen was born on February 8, 1934, to Thor and Helen (Hulbert) Christensen in Sioux Falls. She attended public school and graduated from Washington High School in 1952.

On January 22, 1955, Marlene married Myron Schievelbein in Sioux Falls. The couple lived in Madison, SD, and finally settled back in Sioux Falls in 1960. They became loving parents to their five sons: Mark, Marty, Kevin, Jeff, and James.

In 1995, after spending many years in Hay Springs, NE, Marlene and Myron moved to Humboldt, South Dakota. They returned to Sioux Falls in 2015 to be closer to family.

Myron spent many years traveling as a superintendent of road construction crews. During that time Marlene was the CEO, COO and CFO of the household, raising five boys. As you can imagine she had to use the phrase, "wait until your father gets home", many times over the years.

Marlene enjoyed working at West Central High School when her children were older. She especially enjoyed her years driving the school bus for pre-school children. She retired in 2013. Marlene loved baking, cross-stitching, reading, playing cards and coloring.

Over the years Marlene made many lifelong friends. Most recently it was her friends and fellow card players at the Creekside apartments.

Marlene was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Humboldt, SD, and she was a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her sons: Marty (Micki) Schievelbein of Yankton, SD; Jeff (Renee) Schievelbein of Sioux Falls; and James Schievelbein of Sioux Falls. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, her daughter-in-law Phyllis Schievelbein of Sioux Falls, and her sister-in-law Tep Christensen of Albert Lea, MN.

Also, a host of nieces, nephews and other extended family.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Thor and Helen Christensen; her husband, Myron Schievelbein; her brother Al Christensen; and two sons, Kevin and Mark Schievelbein.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 7, 2026, with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM, at Miller Westside Chapel, 6200 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57106.
