Born on August 27, 1932 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to William H. and Lois I. (Lee) Dockstader, Mary Ann grew up on a farm near Dell Rapids. She graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls in 1950. On August 20, 1963, Mary Ann married John M. Costello. Together they had three children: Mary Caroline Costello, J. Mike Costello, and J. Pat Costello. After John's health declined, Mary Ann took on the responsibility of managing their rental properties while always balancing work with devotion to her family. She was a loving and dedicated mother and grandmother whose unwavering support and guidance were a cornerstone of her grandchildren's lives.
Mary Ann was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church, where she served as president of the Altar Society and played a key role in the church's fundraising efforts. Her commitment to service extended beyond her church as she volunteered with numerous organizations, including PEO and served as a Den Leader for Cub Scouts where she helped her two sons achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
In her personal life, Mary Ann enjoyed a variety of activities. She found joy in tending her garden, antiquing, and attending symphony concerts. A passionate bridge player, she enjoyed regular games with friends and was known for her gracious hospitality. Whether hosting family gatherings or entertaining friends, Mary Ann cherished bringing people together. Her family and friends will always remember her skilled cooking as she never needed a recipe to create delicious meals and treats.
Mary Ann is survived by her sons, J. Mike Costello of Nashville, TN, and J. Pat (Shawn) Costello of Sioux Falls, SD; her grandchildren, JP Costello, Meredith Costello, and John Costello, all of Sioux Falls, SD; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Costello; her daughter, Mary Caroline Costello; her sister, Bonnie Schnieders; her brothers, Dean Dockstader, Darrell Dockstader and Jerry Dockstader; and her parents, William and Lois Dockstader.
Mary Ann's legacy of love, service, and kindness will forever be remembered by all who knew her.
