It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Jane Erkonen, a cherished mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend, and devoted teacher. Mary Jane left us on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 80.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Miller Southside Chapel, located at 7400 S. Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls. We invite all who knew and loved her to join us in remembering a life well lived. A private burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls.
Mary J. Erkonen, 80, died July 25th, surrounded by her loving family at Avera Prince of Peace. She was born May 5, 1945, in Sioux City, Iowa, to John and Ardith Larsen and graduated from Central High School and Morningside College. On August 6, 1966, she married her high school sweetheart Robert T. Erkonen. They lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for several years before moving to Sioux Falls where they raised their family. Patient and kind, she taught for many years from preschool through high school levels. She loved all four-legged creatures and growing flowers in her garden. Above all, she was a devoted and loving grandma who treasured spending time with her grandchildren.
Blessed to have shared her life are her beloved children and cherished grandchildren: Amy and Patrick Landelle and Marie and Catherine of Edina, MN; Scott and Kimberly Erkonen and Andrew, Abigail, Matthew, and Megan of Brandon; Sean and Danielle Erkonen of Sioux Falls; Cara and Dewey Tullar and Emily and Taylor of Aberdeen. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Robert, parents, and brother John (Jack) Larsen. Survivors include her sister-in-law Cathy Larsen and many dear nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives.
A special thank you to the staff at Prosperous Home Health Care, Trail Ridge Memory Care, Avera Prince of Peace and Avera Hospice for their kindness and care.
Memorial Gathering 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, July 31st, at Miller Funeral Home Southside, 7400 S. Minnesota Avenue, Sioux Falls.
