Foley
Feb 9, 1955 — Oct 8, 2022
Sioux Falls
Mary Surrell Foley 67, passed away on October 8, 2022 at the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls SD after a 20 month fight with cancer.
Mary Adelle Burns was born February 9, 1955 in Sioux Falls SD to James Franklin and Janet Evelyn (Olds) Burns. She attended St Mary's Parochial School where she met one of her best friends for life Deb Nash, who introduced her to her cousin Patty Gaspar, and they attended O'Gorman High School where they rounded out the group with Becky Armstrong, they graduated in the spring of 1973.
Following high school Mary attended Dakota State University in Madison SD. Mary worked at Randall's Super Market in Sioux Falls as a book keeper and at Dr. Fix Dental Office and also at the Hartford Dental Clinic where she retired in March 2021.
On June 7, 1980 Mary was united in marriage to Dennis Surrell. They purchased a cute little home on Duluth Avenue and soon became the proud parents of Matthew John and Alexander James her pride and joy. Mary loved her boys and worked hard to give them a good home and made sure they grew up to be the good upstanding men they are today.
After the boys were well on their way, Mary and Tom Foley were married on August 30, 2009 in Lake Tahoe, CA. They loved motorcycle trips and camping around the country. On their first vacation they followed Lewis and Clark Expedition Trail starting with Spirit Mound all the way to the Coast. They traveled the Oregon Trail and stopped at Independence Rock in Wyoming and took pictures of themselves standing in the wagon wheel ruts that are still visible today. They saw the Donner Party Monument. They've seen Crater Lake, Hoover Dam, and Tombstone, the Pacific Northwest, and Niagara Falls. It was an experience riding through Death Valley. They've seen the Sea Lion Caves, the Smoky Mountains and the Navajo Nation with the wild dogs. They were lucky, or not so lucky, to see many wild animals. They've walked past a moose, elk, a black bear and her cubs, porcupine and beavers. They were charged in Custer by a buffalo while riding on their motorcycle . They've seen whales, dolphins and seals. Tom and Mary have had quite a ride.
Grateful for having shared her life are her ex-husband Dennis, Sioux Falls; her 2 sons Matthew and Alex, her daughter-in-law Carol Curran, Sioux Falls; her 3 granddaughters who called her Grand Mary, Alyson Lilyquist, Emily and Brinley Curran, Sioux Falls; and her sister Kathryn Dowling, Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her husband Tom Foley, her parents, and brother Francis James Burns. Mary was always grateful for all of her dear friends and family, whom she loved.
