Langner
Sep 12, 1948 — Feb 19, 2025
Sioux Falls
Mary Kathleen (Hurney) Langner, loving mother, sister, aunt, grandma, and great-grandmother, died peacefully in her sleep at her Sioux Falls residence on the 19th of February 2025. She was 76 years old.
Celebration of her life visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Monday, February 24, at Miller Funeral Home Southside Chapel, 7400 S. Minnesota Ave., Sioux Falls, SD.
Mary Hurney was born on the 12th of September 1948 in Flandreau, SD to Richard Hurney Sr. and Loretta (Heinricy) Hurney Sundermeyer. She attended first through eighth grade at the St. Mary's School in Elkton, SD and graduated from Elkton High School in 1966. She entered the McKennan Hospital Licensed Practical Nurse one-year program and graduated in 1967. Following graduation, she worked at McKennan Hospital for approximately one year. In June of 1968, she married Lester Langner Jr., who was drafted into the Army, and they moved to Arizona, where the Army had stationed them.
In 1970, Les, Mary and Jimmy moved back to Elkton to the farm. Not too long after that they moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota. On October 28th, Kerry Ann was born in the Pipestone Hospital. At that time, Mary and family moved to Elkton, SD and Mary further pursued her nursing career at the Flandreau Hospital working with Dr. Otey and Dr. Klar. On June 4th in 1975, Kimmy Kay was born at the Flandreau hospital. In 1978, Mary, Jimmy, Kerry, and Kimmy moved to Flandreau and then in January of 1980 they moved to Drexel Drive in Sioux Falls and Mary worked at the VA Hospital for approximately two years.
In 1982, she decided to change her career path, and worked as a waitress, bartender, and eventually a manager at the Sunbird Lounge at Howard Johnson's (HoJos) in Sioux Falls. Not that she had enough on her plate as a single mother of three, she opened Dakota Crystals and managed that for two years and worked part time at the Upper Cut Bar and Grill on the east 10th Street. At that time, she decided to close Dakota Crystals and worked full time at the Upper Cut for about 10 years—she loved working there and Kerry was her boss as they worked very well together. Kerry hired on as the Food and Beverage Director at the Brandon Valley Golf Course. Mary followed Kerry there and worked there for last 22 years.
Mary was a staunch supporter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Backpack for Kids, and Hungry Hearts program here in Sioux Falls.
She enjoyed traveling with her siblings—trip to Ireland, joining Rich, Sandy, and family down in Tampa, Florida, every winter for about five weeks for the last 10 years, or just a road trip to all the small towns like Ward, Elkton, Flandreau to reminisce about the old times and have a beer, or out to the Hutterite Colony in Kimball SD.
Mary is survived by her son Jim and daughters Kerry Thill (Pat) and Kim Rozum (Dan). Grandsons Jacob (Jim), Justin (Jim) and McKenzie, Tyler (Kerry) and AnnMarie, Jordan (Jim) and Katie, Leo (Kim), granddaughters Nora (Kim), Charlotte (Tyler and AnnMarie), great grandsons Newton (Jacob) and Jacek—deceased 2013 (Jacob). Brothers Rich (Sandy) Hurney and Bill (Tracy) Hurney, sister Trisha (Paul Sampson), and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Loretta (Heinricy) Hurney Sundermeyer, her stepfather Clarence Sundermeyer, her father, Richard Hurney Sr., and her older sister Ellen (Hurney) Bunkers and brother-in-law, Kenny Bunkers.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hungry Hearts (Barrel House), 4701 E. 54th St., Sioux Falls, SD, (605)-271-7553 or Backpack for Kids (Feeding South Dakota), 4701 N. Westport Ave., Sioux Falls, SD, (605)-335-0364 on behalf of Mary Langner.
