Mary Benson
August 31, 1934 – May 8, 2025
It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Benson, who died peacefully on May 8, 2025, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 90.
Mary was born on August 31, 1934, in Flandreau, South Dakota, to Earl and Dorothea (Allen) Larson. Her life was marked by devotion to her family, her faith, and her community.
Mary spent many years working at Chester Hardware, where she became a trusted and familiar face to generations of customers. She also served in various other roles that reflected her natural inclination to help others. Whether at work, at home, or in someone else's house, Mary never stood still if there was something to be done.
She had a gift for turning the ordinary into something meaningful, especially during her retirement, when she became known for finding "projects" for her husband, Darrell. Most of these lovingly assigned tasks involved some form of outdoor improvement, which they approached with good-natured banter and teamwork. Mary also ensured that the squirrels and birds in their yard were never overlooked—a small but characteristic gesture of her generous spirit.
Faith was the cornerstone of Mary's life. She played the piano and organ in her local churches, shared her love of scripture through Bible studies, and poured her energy into youth ministries. Her church family and her hometown community were vital parts of her world. She was the kind of person who made everyone feel welcome, because she truly never met someone she didn't like.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Darrell Benson. Their marriage was a partnership marked by laughter, love, and a shared purpose.
She is survived by her son, Brian Benson of Chester, SD; her daughter, Krista (Dave) Beeck of Wentworth, SD; and her grandchildren: Chad Benson of Chester, SD; Tonia (Jon) Meyer of Sioux Falls, SD; Amy (Dave) Larson of Hartford, SD; and Greg (Riley) Beeck of New Hope, MN. She was also the proud great-grandmother of Hadley, Carston, Luke, Tenley, Emerson, Karder, Jase, Kerregan, and Jessa.
Mary's family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at Dow Rummel Village. Their care and kindness were a gift, and many became dear friends.
A service to celebrate Mary's life will be held on Friday, May 16, at 2:00 p.m. at the Halladay-Peterson Chapel at Dow Rummel Village. Visitation will begin one hour before the service. All who knew and loved her are warmly invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, please honor Mary by doing something kind, joyful, or spontaneous—just as she often did. Donations to a local charity in her memory are also welcome.
