Mary "Mickey" Wetering, 93, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away peacefully on Friday, December 26, 2025 surrounded by her family at her home.
Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am Tuesday, December 30 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 140 W. Brian, Tea, SD with burial next to her husband, Darel, at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, Davis, SD.
Visitation will be from 5:00 -7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm Wake and Rosary on Monday, December 29, at Miller Funeral Home Downtown, 507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls, SD.
Mary Magdalen Hurney was born to Thomas J. and Mary (Kelly) Hurney in Elkton, South Dakota on April 12, 1932 - the 4th of 11 children. Mickey, as she was affectionately known, graduated from Elkton High School in 1950, having spent her Junior year at Notre Dame in Mitchell, SD along with her sister Patty. Mickey attended Nettleton business college and was employed by Catherine and Michael Burke in Sioux Falls, AW Smith Insurance, Wilson Storage & Transfer and Western Surety.
After spending many memorable times at the Arkota Ballroom, Mickey and Darel L. Wetering were united in Holy Matrimony at Saint Williams Catholic Church in Aurora, SD on June 25, 1955. The couple lived in Sioux Falls, Harrisburg, Canton and Davis, SD and in Cheyenne, WY from 1979 to 1990 while raising 4 daughters and 2 sons.
Mickey and Darel enjoyed retirement years in both Davis and Sioux Falls beginning in 1990, along with many winter months spent in Arizona. From 2003 to 2025, Mickey lived in her Platinum Valley townhome where she welcomed friends and family with laughs, card games and homemade goodies. In recent years, Mickey was lovingly cared for by her children and their families, dear nieces (Pat), great friends – old and new, and special cousins (MaryAnn and Peggy).
Mickey is survived by four children: Cate Hintz (Monty) Prairie Village KS, Bill Wetering (Betsy) Worthington MN, Nancy Peter (Jack) Ponte Vedra Beach FL, and Amy Wetering, Davis SD, her eleven grandchildren: Renee Shultz, Ryan Hintz, Reid Hintz, Alexandra Kucera, Lizzy Wetering, Daniel Wetering, Laura Christoffer, Mackenzie Shaffer, Delaney Shaffer, Gentry Wetering and Lexie Wetering, and 4 great grandchildren: Adelaide Edwards, Nathan Shultz, Isla Hintz and Charlotte Kucera. . Mickey is also survived by 6 siblings: Helen Parten, Bernadette Hammer, Tom Hurney, Katie Hurney, Patrick Hurney and Bill Hurney. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Daniel in 1982, daughter Mary in 1999, her husband Darel in 2011, and 4 siblings: G'Ann Hegerfeld, Donna Veire, Patty Andrade and Nora Scovil.
Mickey exemplified goodness and was a gift to all who knew her. She was our family treasure, and we are grateful for the wonderful life she enjoyed and for all of those who shared in it.
