Obituary

Matthew John Hanisch, age 66, went to his eternal home on May 28, 2026 at Sanford Heart Hospital Sioux Falls, SD.

Visitation will begin at 4:00 pm with a Celebration of Life and Time of Remembrance at 6:00 pm on Thursday, June 11, 2026 at Miller Funeral Home (Downtown Location) 507 S. Main Ave, Sioux Falls, SD.

Matthew was born on December 5, 1959 to Robert and Ruth (Rudd) Hanisch at Sioux Valley Hospital Sioux Falls, SD.

He graduated from Washington High School in 1978 and attended The University of South Dakota.

He then went onto Officer Training becoming a Police Officer for the City of Sioux Falls, SD.  His Police career was a span of 25 years of service, retiring in 2014.

Matthew was an excellent cook and known to grow giant Box Car Willy tomatoes!

His true love of life was the outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing from ducks, geese, pheasants and deer to catching Walleye's "ripen lips", enjoying all of it with time shared with many dear friends and family members.

Matt's first attempt at snowmobile racing put his vintage Yamaha sled into the finals at Okoboji Vintage Snowmobile Race National Event.  Three weeks before the event with the help from talented friends, Jeff and Russ, the old sleds engine was rebuilt, parts were modified and assembled and ready for the race!

"It's 5 O'clock Somewhere!"…
