Obituary

Michael F. Costello, age 66 of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away Monday September 22, 2014 at Dougherty Hospice House. The family will greet friends from 5:00-7:00pm, with a 7:00 pm Masonic service Wednesday, September 24 at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue. A funeral Mass begins at 2:30 pm Thursday at St. Michael Catholic Church, with burial to follow at St. Michael Cemetery. Mike Costello son of Richard and Lorene Costello was born February 23, 1948 in Sioux City, IA. He grew up there graduating from Heelan High in 1966. He later served in the Naval Reserve. On July 1, 1967, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Guy in Sioux City. Mike started his career with the Sheraton Warrior Hotel in 1965 and went through the Sheraton training program. Mike was also a Head Chef at the Marina Inn, where he mentored many chefs early in their careers. He remained in the hotel business in many different locations until 2004 at which time he began working with SYSCO Foods. Mike was very involved in the March of Dimes, Sioux Falls JazzFest, he helped create the longest running Comedy Club in the area, he help start the first live weekly Racing radio program during the season and a national TV program on Sunday nights off season. Mike also was on the Bash for Cash committees, he worked very hard to raise money and donations for other people fighting cancer. After the initial Bash for Cash was in his honor, he made sure to continue to donate back every chance he could. He had a very creative streak that he expressed through sculpting very large and detailed ice carvings. He was a Mason, Shriner, a member of the El Riad Oriental Band and Sprint Cars club. He also was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, SD Innkeepers Association, past president Dakota Heritage & Lakes, served on the State Tourism board and Youth Enrichment Services. He was also active in local dirt track auto racing. A few of his hobbies included riding his Harley, fast cars (muscle cars), playing his guitars, Huset's Speedway, smoking nice cigars and taking care of his 2 welsh corgi's. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Marilyn, his children, Michael (Kazuko) Costello, Aledo, TX, Debra (Brian) Nichols, Sioux Falls, Cheryl Costello, Overland Park, KS, Kristin Costello, Sioux Falls, his grandchildren, Natasha and Meghan Costello, Stephanie, Brooke and Dylan Nichols, a brother Richard Costello, Pocatello, ID., and a sister in-law, Agnes Linda Costello, Cedar Rapids, IA. His parents and brothers Patrick and Daniel preceded him in death.
