Obituary

Michael "Mike" E. Nolz Jr., age 90, passed away on December 11, 2024 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Private services will be held.

Mike was born on September 29, 1934 to Michael Sr. and Elizabeth (Schoenfelder) Nolz near Dimock, South Dakota. He was raised in Parkston where he later worked construction in his younger years. Mike joined the military in 1953, enlisting in the Marine Corp. until his honorable discharge.

On June 30, 1955, Mike was joined in marriage to LaVelle Schuh in Mitchell, South Dakota where the couple would make their home. They had two children, Dean and Starla. Mike moved to Sioux Falls in 1967 and he began working for Sioux Falls Public Schools as a custodian. He worked there for 18 years before later becoming a driver for Rochester Armored Car Services and Transportation. He retired in 1997 after 9 years.

Mike was hardworking and a dedicated provider for his family. Later in life, he enjoyed fishing and camping with LaVelle, often to Otter Tail in Minnesota or Madison, South Dakota. He enjoyed being outside, feeding the squirrels and birds. After retirement, his favorite activity was tending to his yard. You could often catch Mike mowing the lawn multiple times a week, just so he could be outside. Mike would also golf, though he was less concerned about hitting a hole-in-one and more excited about collecting any loose golf balls on the course. Mike was often quiet and kept to himself, but once he was comfortable with you, he was a great story teller of his glory days spent getting up to shenanigans with his buddies.

Grateful to have shared Mike's life with him are his children, Dean Nolz of Canistota, SD and Starla (Brian) Tate of Pipestone, MN; his grandchildren, Sasha Henrickson of Omaha, NE and Joshua (Elisha) Henrickson and his children, Mason and Hudson, of Omaha, NE; his brother, Pat (Dorthey) Nolz of Yankton, SD; and his sister-in-law, Sandra Entenman of Sioux Falls, SD. He is preceded in death by his wife, LaVelle Nolz; his parents, Michael Sr. and Elizabeth Nolz; his daughter-in-law, Susan Nolz; and his adored pet poodle, Smokee.
