Michael Otten, of Hurley, South Dakota, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Michael was 64 years old.

A graveside service will be held on October 31, 2025, at 11:00 am at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

Michael David Otten was born on January 10, 1961, to Donald and Sandra (Swavely) Otten. He grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1979.

Following high school, Michael joined the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged.  He returned to Sioux Falls and married Julie Killian. They later divorced after having two children together, Tyler Michael and Andrew Caleb.

Michael was self-employed and worked as a painter, which he very much enjoyed.

During his spare time, Michael lived life to the fullest and showed it in everything he did. Michael had many hobbies, was a free spirit, and loved music.  He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, traveling, fishing, and hunting. Michael was a long-time member of 12-Step programs and inspired many people.

Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Mitchell Senec of Arizona; his mother, Sandra Otten and his brother, Jeff Otten, both of River Falls, WI, as well as other close family and friends. Michael also had one grandson, Owen Otten.

Michael was preceded in death by his father, Donald Otten, his sister, Kristi Otten, and his sons, Tyler Otten and Andrew Otten.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 31st at the Siouth Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
